Egypt Family Planning Method Mix Indicates Shifting toward Hormonal Contraceptives

BACKGROUND: The study is of practical importance for policy makers and family planning (FP) program managers as the profile FP method-mix with a shift from mechanical method intrauterine devices (IUD) to hormonal methods such oral contraceptives (OCs) injectables predicts critical situation maternal child health reflects shortcomings in service delivery program. AIM: purpose current was identify reasons progressive IUD OCs Egypt. METHODS: an-operations research conducted at four levels Ministry Health Population/FP (MOHP/FP) delivery: Central (headquarter, HQ), governorate, district, points. It included five MOHP/United Nations Fund Population Activities-Contraceptive Security Project governorates that represent, urban governorates, Lower Egypt, Upper Both qualitative data in-depth interviews MOHP/HQ staff, Two Focus Group Discussions Directorates staff nurses quantitative through self-administered questionnaire 607 providers (SP). RESULTS: There consensus on actual use. Reasons were absence incentives healthcare insertion services (64%) improper training physicians (45%), availability all time. CONCLUSION: three articulating issues lead shifting are: Unsatisfactory incentive systems SPs clients’ choice independent use/autonomy, times reasonable cost both public private sectors.
